"Aiesu" (アイエス) is the Japanese term for intersex (IS, ergo Ai-esu when put in katakana). Aiesu is a manga by Rokuhana Chiyo which is both educational and emotional; it delves into the lives of people who are intersexual (some who prefer to live as female, some who prefer to live as male, and some who prefer to be both), their families, and the trouble they have “blending” into society. It touches upon issues such as teenage sexuality and the desire to feel “normalcy”, the moral dilemma of choosing a sex for an intersexual baby, the inability to reproduce, gender, and ultimately finding love and acceptance. Very highly recommended!
